MESI leads a national project, “Development of advanced science and technology for marine environmental impact assessment”, funded by the Korean Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries. The project’s aim is to develop and establish guidelines and standards for marine environmental impact assessment in South Korea.

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is an important step in the development of offshore wind farms, supporting the application to obtain essential permits and licences.

Prof. Jong Seong Khim, Chief of MESI, said, “In signing the MOU with RPS, I am very pleased to have the capability to present advanced guidelines for appropriate utilization and development of sea spatial area by combining the expertise of both parties in the field of marine environmental impact assessment.”

RPS South Korea Country Manager Sam (Sangmok) Roh says, “We are very pleased to have the chance to collaborate with MESI to discuss the sometimes complex topic of marine environmental impact assessment. We are keen to support the acceleration of offshore wind development in Korea and across Asia and the EIA process will be an important part of that development.”

RPS is continuing to expand its position in South Korea. Most recently, the team’s numbers have grown with their latest addition, EIA Manager Dong-Joo Kim, whose focus is coordination and delivery of Environmental Impact Assessment to meet international standards. Prior to this, RPS opened a new office premises located in central Seoul in September 2021, and successfully launched two Floating LiDAR buoys as part of the development of Equinor’s Firefly offshore wind farm project.
